This extraordinary early 1900s Antique Thousand Pyramids Pattern Quilt is a true masterpiece of textile artistry. Featuring thousands of tiny hand-pieced and hand-quilted triangle pieces (each measuring about 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" x 2 1/2"), the quilt is constructed from individual triangle units stitched into squares and then quilted together. A single fabric backing supports the intricate top. A 9-inch machine-quilted black border was later added to create a rod pocket for wall hanging. A thin layer of cotton batting and a single layer of printed cotton form the back.
Provenance traces back to the 1940s when it belonged to one of the grandmothers of Karen and Judy Wittmayer in St. Cloud, Minnesota. It became a family wedding gift in 1965, remained displayed in a rural Wisconsin home until 1999, and was carefully stored in a cedar chest until 2024, when it was retrieved and found to be in excellent condition.
